Harare - More than 40 people have died in a road accident that occurred on Wednesday night in Zimbabwe where roads are described as death traps because of their poor state.
At least 25 others survived, but were injured in the accident that occurred along the Harare-Chirundu highway.
Reports say a King Lion bus that was headed for Zambia rammed into a tree after the driver lost control, killing about 40 passengers on the spot, and injuring several others.
The injured have been sent to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital.
Transport minister Joram Gumbo has admitted Zimbabwe’s roads are “death traps” with countless deep potholes.
Gumbo however said government, that spends millions nearly every month on President Robert Mugabe’s foreign junkets, is too broke to rehabilitate them.
Statistics released by the police last year indicate that Zimbabwe’s roads have become death traps with an average of 2 000 people dying each year on the roads.
