As the Warriors continue preparations for the crucial first qualifying match for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, Captain Knowledge Musona is optimistic of the team’s chances of winning against Liberia on Sunday.

Despite the changes in both the technical team and the players, Musona said Zimbabwe, like every other team in the group, has an equal opportunity to top the group, and that hinges on winning the game against Liberia on 11 June at the National Sports Stadium.

“It’s obvious we are targeting the three points because it is the first game and it is very crucial.

“We are playing at our home ground, and we really need to do everything that we can and play to the best of our abilities and try to win,” he said.

Musona says the whole group is focussed on the task at hand and everyone is working hard to overcome the upcoming challenge.

“I think it is the most important thing [winning the game] everyone is thinking about at the moment.

“We are going to work hard in the next few days and prepare very well; I think on Sunday we will be able to deliver and give the nation a [positive] result,” Musona added.

Musona is the newly named captain to lead the Warriors on Sunday and beyond, replacing Willard Katsande who is not part of the squad.

On his new role, Musona said he is honoured, but will work closely with his teammates because they are equally capable leaders who also deserve to be named as team captains.

“I think it is a great honour to represent the country and I really appreciate the coach for choosing me.

“I know everyone here deserves to be captain and we are all leaders, [however] I will take the responsibility with the rest of the team, working together and sharing ideas,” the new Warriors captain said.

Zimbabwe and Liberia are in Group G, together with Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Injured striker, Khama Billiat has been ruled out as he is still nursing an injury. Angered by the reports, the Sundowns team manager Peter Ndlovu had to travel with Billiat to Zimbabwe to clear the air about his alleged refusal to release the reigning PSL Footballer of the Season to the national team.
