Lilongwe - Twenty Malawian legislators face arrest for abusing the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), Finance Minister, Goodall Gondwe said.

Gondwe told Parliament a government audit revealed close to K80million of CDF could not be accounted by close to 20 legislators.

The Finance Minister accused the legislators of dipping their fingers into the fund meant to finance development projects in electoral constituencies, adding many of the lawmakers were failing the transparency and accountability test.

“As government we want to ensure that the suspects are brought to book and prosecuted,” Gondwe told Parliament.

Recent reports alleged some lawmakers diverted the CDF to buy top of the range vehicles for their spouses.

Gondwe said the level of abuse of the CDF has prompted government to consider the CDF altogether, and finding other means of channeling CDF to the people.

Government recently increased CDF from K18 million to K23 million though legislators wanted the funds increased to K30 million.
