President Filipe Nyusi last week spoke out against new formations promoting a wave of instability in some areas of the country.

According to Nyusi, quoted on their website by Radio Mozambique, these actions tend to undermine and delay development plans and efforts for the search for effective peace in Mozambique.

“Now there is another war that, unconsciously or consciously, some people are waging,” Nyusi told a popular rally in Chitima, Cahora Bassa district, Tete province.

“We need to send a warning immediately, because there are those who think that the war is the one where Renamo is firing on the population or the government, or the government is firing on Renamo people. This is no longer a war, but there is another one that is being waged by other people, maybe much more dangerous, ” he said.

Later, Filipe Nyusi gave some details on how the groups in question operate.

“They go from house to house inciting confusion and disorganisation, and forbidding people from going to their plots. They are waging a war and it is very dangerous. They are usually people who do not work,” he said.

Filipe Nyusi said that the authorities were working to identify the members of the groups concerned, but also called for the people to be on their guard.

“We will identify this group that is creating this new war. The Mozambican people have to be more vigilant because it is a new war and it is very dangerous,” the president said.

The working visit to Tete ended last Saturday with a positive evaluation of findings on the ground.

Filipe Nyusi highlighted agricultural production, which has surpassed targets for the supply of the local needs and has surpluses to sell in other provinces. The head of state urged that the effort be redoubled so as to reach even higher levels of production, since, as he said, “this is now seen to be possible”.

After Tete, Filipe Nyusi will visit Inhambane province as the next stop in his working visit tour.
