Cape Town - Police are hunting a Zimbabwean man who allegedly killed his wife’s week-old baby boy by bashing him against the ground in a fit of rage.

The murder has shocked both Zimbabweans and locals in Kraaifontein, Cape Town.

It is believed the man learnt that the baby was not his, after his wife developed labour complications prompting her to divulge the real father of the baby as per Shona tradition. In Shona a pregnant woman facing labour difficulties is by culture forced to disclose any cheating or else she will not deliver.

After his wife disclosed that she was impregnated by the husband’s big brother the man ran amok and crashed the helpless infant on the ground. He threatened to kill the young mother if she called the police.

Eyewitnesses say the man hurriedly sold his fridge before disappearing.

Residents say the Zimbabwean national then fled from his shack in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, and has not been seen since.

It’s believed Maxwell Mapira, 26, is hiding out in the Strand or Lwandle area.
