Pretoria - SOUTH Africa’s opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) party has laid the blame on the scourge of violent crimes and murder in the country on the ruling ANC government.

Annual crime statistics released by the South African Police Service (SAPS) last week showed the country remains one of the world’s crime capitals, despite recording a 1.8 percent decline.

DA MP, Zakhele Mbhele said this is unacceptable, adding “enough is enough; we need to take our country back from criminals”.

“The scourge of violence in South Africa is a damning indictment on the ANC government. Violent crime in South Africa has reached crisis point and sadly SAPS seems to be losing the fight,” Mbhele said in a statement on Sunday.

Mbhele said Parliament will on Tuesday debate the scourge of crime and murder in South Africa, as requested by the DA.

“The time has come for Minister Fikile Mbalula to urgently reinstate the specialised units, which were successful at targeting specific crimes such as rural safety units, anti-drug and gang units. These were disabled with no effective alternative to replace them,” Mbhele added.

With 2.1 million serious crimes recorded over the last year, the murder rate now stands at the highest it’s been in 10 years. With hijackings, sexual assaults and robbery all increasing, many were left with a sense of disbelief, fear and even anger.
