Zambian President, Edgar Lungu has made subtle threats against the country’s judiciary at a time when the Constitutional Court is handling a case on his eligibility to stand in 2021.
The opposition wants the Con-Court to declare Lungu not eligible to stand in 2021, arguing this is necessary to rescue the country from a one party state.
Lungu warned barring him from a third term will plunge the country into civil strife, according to a report in the Mast newspaper.
“People are saying Zambian courts should be very brave and make decisions like the Kenyan courts, saying Zambian courts should be brave and make decisions which are in the interests of the people.
“But to our friends who are in the court system, I’m saying, do not plunge this country into chaos by imitating or emulating Kenya or any other court system, for that matter, which does not care about the interests of the people,” Lungu is quoted saying upon arrival at Solwezi Airport.
