Harare - Zimbabwe’s military says “significant” progress has been made in negotiations with President Robert Mugabe on his exit plan amid reports the 93-year-old leader is refusing to step down.

Mugabe has been under house arrest since Tuesday after the military took over government, and negotiations have been going on since then.

“Since our last update on developments in the county, we wish to inform the nation that significant progress has been made in our operation. To this end, we have accounted for some of the criminals while others are still at large.

“We are currently engaging with the Commander in Chief on the way forward and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible,” the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) said in a statement.

The names of the said criminals were not given.

“We implore other security services to continue operations and carry out their duties without any form of impediment to our operation. We will periodically make press releases to keep the public informed of developments in the country,” the ZDF added.

The statement comes after the SADC Troika issued a statement saying “we noted with great concern the unfolding situation in the Republic of Zimbabwe. SADC Organ Troika further re-affirmed the need for SADC member states to remain guided by their Constitutions. SADC Organ Troika called upon all stakeholders in Zimbabwe to settle the political challenges through peaceful means.”
