Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF has sacked President Robert Mugabe as party leader and Emmerson Mnangagwa has been appointed in his place.
The party has also fired the First Lady Grace Mugabe and her top allies, Jonathan Moyo, Saviour Kasukuwere, Patrick Zhuwao and Ignatius Chombo.
This comes at a time the 93-year-old leader is reportedly on hunger strike and under house arrest.
Events have been moving very fast for the ouster of Mugabe since the army took over the country.
As soon as the decision to remove Mugabe as Zanu-PF leader was announced, officials started singing “Kutonga Kwaro” by Jah Prayzah.
“Now that ZANU PF has fired Mugabe, Cabinet Ministers must now seriously consider their positions. Mass resignations would effectively cripple his government and make it more untenable for him to continue. That surely is the logical path following the sacking,” Political analyst Alex Magaisa has said.
Zanu-PF has given Mugabe until midday on Monday to resign or be impeached in Parliament.
