Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has offered his resignation letter ending 37 years of his strong grip on power.
Mugabe has been under pressure to step down in recent weeks after the army took over the country.
Celebrations erupted in Harare following the news of Mugabe’s long overdue resignation.
Mugabe’s top ally, Jonathan Moyo tweeted “There’ll never be anyone like Cde RG Mugabe. I’m grateful for the opportunity to have served my country under & with him. I’m proud that I stood with & by this iconic leader during the trying moments of the last days of his Presidency. Democracy requires politics to lead the gun!”
As The Speaker was presiding over the impeachment, Justice Minister Bonyongwe interrupted him, carrying a letter. Speaker Mudenda then asked MPs to excuse him. They grumbled. But this was it. He announced the letter had come. Mugabe has resigned!
