Dar es Salaam - TANZANIAN police have arrested a woman over lesbian charges after a video clip of her kissing and hugging another woman at a party went viral.
The woman from the north eastern town of Geita was arrested on Sunday after the video clip was widely circulated on social media.
The woman is later seen presenting a ring to the woman she was kissing.
Local media reports quote Tanzania’s Mwanza region police chief, Ahmed Msangi confirming the arrest, adding police were on the hunt for the other woman in the video.
“The plan is to eliminate the entire chain of people involved or supporting homosexuality for the betterment of the generations,” Msangi is quoted saying.
Homosexuality is a criminal offence in the East African nation, where a conviction for having “carnal knowledge of any person against the order of nature” can carry a life sentence.
Authorities have also threatened Non-governmental Organisations accusing of promoting homosexuality.
In October, police arrested South African human rights lawyer Sibongile Ndashe along with twelve other colleagues on charges of “promoting homosexuality” in the East African country.
