Morgan Tsvangirai talks to VP Nelson Chamisa and Douglas Mwonzora.
Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, Movement for Democratic Change, has down-played widespread media reports claiming that its Ailing leader Morgan Tsvangirai has hinted at stepping down.
The speculation emanated from Morgan Tsvangirai’s earlier statement, which to many, indicated the veteran leader’s plans to hand over power to a younger and vibrant candidate.

Speculation went overdrive on social media platforms with Nelson Chamisa being identified as a potential candidate.

Contrary to recent press reports that suggested that President Tsvangirai will soon be stepping down from the leadership of the party, the fact of the matter is that President Tsvangirai remains the leader of the MDC and he is the MDC Presidential candidate for the 2018 elections,” Obert Chaurura Gutu, MDC-T National Spokesperson said.

Gutu went further to say that his boss ”continues to recover very well whilst resting at home and that he was due to leave the country for South Africa later on Tuesday afternoon for his routine medical check-up”.

Unfazed by calls for the country’s biggest opposition party to effect leadership renewal, the party will be rolling out a program of action that includes rallies and other public meetings throughout the length and breadth of the country.

The party has also engaged the Zimbabwe Election Commission over the issue of the diaspora vote ahead of the elections.
