LAGOS:- NIGERIA has evacuated over a 1000 of its citizens from Libya where black Africans were being captured by rebels for slave trade purposes.
Over 5000 Nigerians are reportedly stranded in Libya.
The Federal government on Monday announced it repatriated 487 of the citizens, bringing to a total of 1, 030 who have so far been evacuated from the North African country.
Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama on Janaury 5 led a delegation on fact finding mission to Libya to secure the release of Nigerian migrants stranded in that country.
Videos have emerged showing black Africans being auctioned in Libya for as low as $400, focusing international attention on the exploitation of migrants and refugees in the North Africa country.
Libya is seen as a getaway to Europe for hundreds of thousands of suffering Africans but many have died during the torturous journey on sea, while several desperate others are being captured for re-sale by human trafficking syndicates.
