Brussels: THE European Union (EU) will consider observing Zimbabwe’s harmonized elections set for the next few months –if President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government extends an invitation to the bloc.
”The EU would consider favourably electoral observation, provided that the required conditions are fulfilled and that an invitation from the Government of Zimbabwe is received,” the EU Council said in one of its resolutions after its Monday meeting in Brussels.
“The upcoming electoral process will be an essential step. The EU welcomes the commitment of the authorities to hold elections in line with the constitution, and underlines the importance that the conditions are in place to allow those elections to be peaceful, inclusive, credible and transparent”.

Mnangagwa recently said elections will be held in 6 months, and reiterated that regional, African and international election observer missions will be invited to monitor the polls.
The EU also reaffirmed its position to assist Mnangagwa’s administration in its re-engagement efforts with international financial resources to unlock much needed foreign direct investment that eluded the country under Mugabe’s.
Zimbabwe is currently in a process of normalising relations with the EU.
Former President, Robert Mugabe, for years barred the EU from observing the country’s polls accusing the bloc of imposing sanctions on him, his wife Grace, family and close associates over human rights abuses.
