A new political party - New Patriotic Front - reportedly led by disgruntled former ruling Zanu-PF members aligned to former President Robert Mugabe, has petitioned the African Union and SADC over the ‘coup’ which led to the ouster of the veteran leader.

The G40 whose members stood by former head of state, Robert Mugabe, are believed to be behind the new project which if it prevails may resuscitate Robert and Grace Mugabe’s political life.

The petition is addressed to AU chairperson, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, President Alpha Conde (Guinea) and SADC chairman Jacob Zuma.

Before the alleged Coup, the G40 splinter had pushed for ”Mugabe dynasty” by throwing Grace Mugabe into the political fray – a move which triggered Mugabe’s downfall and the rise of Emmerson Mnangagwa in a military fashion.

In a 79-paged petition addressed to the African Union and SADC, referenced: The 15 November 2017 Military Coup in Zimbabwe and Extra Ordinary Situation in Zimbabwe, the party described the new administration in Zimbabwe as ”Unconstitutional, illegitimate and abnormal.”

The party whose frontperson is unknown argues that the political take-over in Zimbabwe was a coup and the regional bodies should not recognise the new government.

In the petition, the NPF alleges that Mugabe was forced to resign against his will and the soldiers who facilitated the taking over of government institutions did so illegally.

The New Patriotic Front demands that the AU and SADC not to recognise the new regime in Zimbabwe, condemn the military coup, cease all deplomatic ties with Zimbabwe, investigate the situation, establish a transitional authority and above all deploy a force to ensure demilitarisation of politics.

However soon after the alleged peaceful coup the AU said the change of government in Zimbabwe was largely peaceful and in accordance with the laws of the land.
