The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa has sent his condolences to the Islamic Republic of Iran following plane crash.

On behalf of the Government and the people of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa has conveyed a message of condolences to the government and the people of the Islamic Republic of Iran following the plane crash that occurred in the Zagros Mountain Range on Sunday, 18 February 2018, killing all passengers and crew members on board, totaling 66 lives.

President Ramaphosa said: “We extend our condolences to His Excellency President Hasan Rouhani, the Government and the people of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The South African people stand with the Iranian people, particularly the families of the victims, during this time of mourning.”

An Iranian airplane brought back into service only months ago after being grounded for seven years crashed on Sunday in a foggy, mountainous region of southern Iran, and officials feared all 65 people on board were killed.

It had 59 passengers and six crew members, the state-run IRNA news agency reported on Sunday night, lowering the toll to 65 from an initially reported 66
