Investors are scrambling for mining licences after the discovery of rich diamond deposits in Masvingo province, south of the capital Harare.

The investors who are interested in extracting the gems have been asked to submit business proposals and the government will allocate licences accordingly.

“I have just been briefed about the discovery of rich diamond deposits in the Sese area of Chivi and the gems are not alluvial diamonds, but they are kimberlite pipes rich in diamonds discovered in the area in an exciting development for mining in our province and the entire country,” Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Senator Josaya Hungwe revealed to The Herald newspaper.

Preliminary indications shows that the kimberlite pipes stretched from Sese to the Mandiva area, which are about 10 kilometres apart.

The latest discovery of the gems affirmed Masvingo as a mineral-rich province in the country boasting of other minerals like lithium which is mined at Bikita Minerals, gold at Renco Mine and coal, which is mined in the Lowveld.

This comes at a time the new government has declared the country as open for investment.

Former President Robert Mugabe’s draconian and bad investment policies had scared away investors leading to economic stagnation Zimbabwe. But the new dispensation led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa has reversed many of Mugabe’s ugly policies and has put back the country on a positive trajectory.
