Harare: THE European Union, United States and other foreign envoys accredited to Zimbabwe have called on President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration to shed light on the whereabouts of abducted activist
Itai Dzamara.
Dzamara was abducted on March 9, 2015 – two days calling for a mass action against former President Robert Mugabe.
“Today 9 March, 2018, three years have passed since the abduction of human rights defender Itai Dzamara.
“His disappearance remains a dark shadow on the new horizon for Zimbabwe. The heads of mission encourage the new administration to ensure that human rights violations are tackled decisively and transparently, to shed light on Mr Dzamara’s fate and to serve justice,” the Heads of Mission of the EU, Australia, Canada, Switzerland and the USA said in a statement.
Dzamara, a Zimbabwean journalist and political activist, was known mostly for his Occupy Africa Unity Square campaign against Mugabe’s government.
He once hand-delivered the letter to the President’s office at Munhumutapa Building in the capital, Harare.
According to Dzamara, the petition called on Mugabe to step down and pave way for a process towards the establishment of a new administration that takes over, to manage the country and prepare for fresh elections.
