Zimbabwe’s former President has given a vivid account of how he was toppled in a military coup by the new President Emmerson Mnangagwa with the assistance of the national army.
In an interview aired on SABC Mugabe has described President Mnangagwa as an illegal President and Zimbabwe does not deserve to be led by government which was assisted by the army.
“The army made sure that the other organs of the government including the police were completely neutralised,” Mugabe revealed for the first time since his dramatic ouster.
“It was truly a military take-over.”
The former leader also raised alarm on human rights abuses during the coup claiming that many people were bashed, maimed while some are still missing.
Mugabe, however, said he is willing to negotiate for a common ground with Mnangagwa and try to steer the country back to constitutional democracy.
Mugabe has given a clearest hint that he is far from retiring from politics and may launch a surprising come back.
This cements rife speculation suggesting that he is behind the formation of the new political party - National Patriotic Front - which is reportedly being backed by troubled Professor Jonathan Moyo and Patrick Zhuwao.
It is not yet clear whether Mugabe wants to come back into politics to lead or he simply wants to push for his wife, Grace to take over.
Commentators have argued that Mugabe’s machinations and utterances are meant to discredit the new leadership ahead of the elections.
Mugabe ruled the Southern African country for over three decades and his authoritarian rule saw the country experiencing runaway inflation, untold poverty and suffering as well as gross human rights abuses.
He controversially lost an election in 2008 to the late Morgan Tsvangirai but refused to cede power with the full support of the army which eventually played a role in his final fall.
Call it whatever you want Mdhara, but the issue is that isu maZimbabweans where fed up of you. We supported Mnangagwa and the Military action because we needed you gone. You want to talk Democracy and Constitutionalism now because you no longer have power. To HELL with you. How many people were killed or disappeared under your watch ???? Where is Itai ??? How many homes did you destroy to settle political scores. TO HELL WITH YOU JUST GO. You are the worst thing that ever happened to Zimbabwe. Tseki
