Harare: Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has claimed that he was “God-ordained” to be the country’s leader.

Mnangagwa took over from Robert Mugabe who stepped down in November 2017 after nationwide public protests, military pressure and threats to impeach him.

“We are now in a new dispensation, and we have a new government, but it is all because of God’s plan for this country,” a report in the state-owned Sunday Mail quoted Mnangagwa saying in his address to the Zion Christian Church congregants attending an Easter conference in Bikita.

“It is God’s plan for me to be President. It was in God’s plan that I was going to eat poison, and survive; become a border jumper and survive.

“It is God’s plan to be where I am today. It is all God’s planning.”

Fierce supporters of Mugabe used to say that the former guerrilla leader was chosen to rule Zimbabwe till death.

Mugabe was blasphemously called Black Jesus, the anointed Moses, encyclopedia, God-ordained while other ministers even oddly claimed the geriatric leader will defy nature and not die.
