President Nyusi has said that new demands made by some members of parliament are hindering the progress of the package on decentralisation agreed between the head of state and Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama.
Filipe Nyusi was speaking on Sunday at the end of his working visit to Maputo province.
“I have been asking the Assembly of the Republic to take the consensus document seriously, but we are now feeling that our fellow members of parliament, not all of them, but some, are demanding new, difficult things, which will delay the process. There are many Mozambicans expecting to see this a country with effective peace, including our brothers on the Renamo side who are still in the field. We need to cherish the hope that they will leave [the field]. I hope there are no people who want them to stay there indefinitely, and for them to leave, we need to move forward with the document, which is considered a consensus,” he said.
The president made a positive assessment of his four-day visit to the province of Maputo.
