Zimbabwe: Mapfumo Drops Hit Election Song

Uncensored and fearless music legend Thomas Tafirenyika Mapfumo has released a single ‘Chauya Chauya’ urging Zimbabweans to exercise their right to vote wisely in the coming election.


The 72 year-old musician proved that he still has the pulling capacity when thousands of fans filled the Glamis Arena, in the capital Harare.

The song, Chauya Chauya (come what may) which leaked to the public before its scheduled release became an instant hit as fans sang along during Mapfumo’s solid performance in Harare.


The song is already being played in taverns, taxis and private cars barely a week after it was “released” or leaked.

The Lion of Zimbabwe, as Mapfumo is known to his legion of fans, performed in Zimbabwe after 14 years in exile in the U.S.

Mukanya was pushed out the country for his brave criticism of the former President Robert Mugabe whom he accused of plunging the country into economic crisis.

His hit song Mamvemve (Rags) in which he accused the governing party of collapsing the once flourishing country, was banned in Zimbabwe.


Since the beginning of his career in the 1960s, Mukanya was renowned for speaking truth to power, something he carried into independent Zimbabwe, placing him on a collision course with the authorities.
