Alderman Ian Neilson is the new Acting Mayor of Cape Town.

The City of Cape Town has elevated Alderman Ian Neilson to the position of Acting Mayor taking over from troubled Patricia De Lille.

The Democratic Alliance which runs the City has ceased the party membership of Patricia de Lille.

This means she has lost her seat as a councilor and is therefore no longer the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, with immediate effect.

The Municipal Act states that, when the post of Executive Mayor is vacant, the Executive Deputy Mayor effectively takes over.

Having been the Deputy Mayor for the past nine years and City councilor for 22 years, Alderman Ian Neilson, has the right feet to take the city of Cape Town forward.

“I will now apply my mind in the coming days to appointing an interim Mayoral Committee that will serve until Council elects a new Executive Mayor,” Neilson said in a statement.

Neilson is a civil engineer and practised as a consulting engineer in the field of water engineering for 20 years, before entering full time politics.

In 2001, when he held the post of Executive Councillor for Safety & Health, he was responsible for the establishment of the Cape Town City Police Service.
