The private Patel Dam, used for irrigation and fish farming, burst its earthen banks on Wednesday evening in Solai, Nakuru killing over forty people.
The toll, the highest in a single flood-related incident now brings to 162 the number of people who have died countrywide as a result of floods since heavy rains started in March.
The Wednesday night incident occurred at around 9pm when Patel Dam broke its banks sweeping villages in the Solai area of Subukia.
The dam is close to an informal settlement housing casual labourers who work on nearby farms.
The Kenyan Red Cross estimates that up to 500 families were affected by the disaster.
