Harare: Zimbabwe’s heavyweight cage fighter, Elvis “Bomber” Moyo, has lost the right to fight Commonwealth champion, Britain’s Joe Joyce because the country is not part of the bloc.

Moyo, a World Boxing Federation (WBF) All-Africa champion, was set to square off with Joyce on June 15 at York Hall, Britain.

“Because Zimbabwe is not part of the Commonwealth, I could not be sanctioned to fight for a Commonwealth fight,” Moyo is quoted by state media saying.

Former President Robert Mugabe pulled out of the Commonwealth in 2003 following a fallout with coloniser Britain over the land reform exercise at the turn of the millennium.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed wish to re-join the Commonwealth.

A Commonwealth team arrived in Zimbabwe early this week for a five-day pre-election assessment ahead of the July 30 harmonised polls.
