Maputo: THE United States Department of State has warned its citizens against travelling to Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado Province where tensions are high following recent terrorist attacks.
Islamist fundamentalists beheaded ten people in the two villages in Palma district, in the Northern Province of Cabo Delgado and close to the Tanzanian border recently.
“In light of information pointing to the likelihood of imminent attacks on government and commercial centres in the district headquarters of Palma, Cabo Delgado Province in the coming days, we strongly advise American citizens in the district headquarters of Palma to consider departing the area immediately,” the US Department of state said.
“Those who elect to remain in Palma district are strongly advised to avoid travel to the district headquarters and to postpone visits to both government offices and retail locations, including markets. American citizens with planned travel to Palma District are strongly advised to postpone such travel.”
Mozambican police on Friday night captured three alleged members of the terrorist group that has been burning villages and murdering villagers in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
A recent study of Islamist insurgency in in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado found that the rebels are funded by the illegal trafficking in timber and rubies.
Muslims make up about 18% of Mozambique’s population. Roman Catholics form the largest single religious grouping, with about 30% of its 30 million people.
