Maputo: Mozambique’s rebel Renamo has defended is interim leader Ossufo Momade for choosing to line in the mountains of Gorongosa, saying this is to ensure compliance with the ceasefire by the organisation’s guerrillas.

Renamo secretary general Manuel Bissopo reiterated the commitment of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) to the maintenance of peace in Mozambique, during a rally in Nacala district, Nampula province north of the country.

“General Ossufo Momade established residence in the mountains of Gorongosa, next to the General Staff ” of the party, this being the way “Renamo has found to ensure that the whole of the truce is respected,” said Manuel Bissopo.

The presence of Momade in Gorongosa, he continued, is an assurance that Renamo wants to contribute to the end of the suffering of the Mozambican people, he added.

“It is in complete obedience to the orders left by President Afonso Dhlakama because the Mozambican people do not deserve any more suffering,” he said.

Momade moved from the capital of Mozambique to the mountains of Gorongosa, where the “headquarters” of the guerrilla movement is located after the death of the party president, Afonso Dhlakama, on May 5.

Dhlakama declared an indefinite truce on the clashes between the armed wing of Renamo and the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces, in January this year.
