Harare: Zimbabwe’s opposition takes to streets of the capital, Harare on Wednesday July 11 to protest alleged electoral malpractices by the country’s electoral body ahead of the July 30 harmonised elections.
The MDC Alliance, a grouping of opposition parties, accuse the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) of unfair practices to ostensibly rig the polls in favour of the ruling Zanu PF.
ZEC denies the charge.
The MDC Alliance accuses ZEC of failing to provide a complete and analysable Biometric Voters Roll (BVR) and failing to fully transparent on the ballot printing process
“We are going to demonstrate until we reach a consensus on sticking issues.
“If they fail we are going to demonstrate on a daily basis,” MDC Alliance presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa is quoted saying by local newspapers.
ZEC chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba however argues the ZEC has done everything within the law to ensure transparency in the electoral processes leading to the elections.
“The strict letter of the law is that we have the exclusive constitutional mandate to procure ballot paper, to design it, to print it and to distribute it.
“We are aware of our constitutional duty to be transparent, to provide a final voters’ roll which is analysable and searchable. It is our considered view that we have done so and that we have complied with the law without necessarily impinging on the rights of others,” Chigumba told journalists during a weekly press briefing on Monday.
