Harare: Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the ruling Zanu-PF party is already preparing election victory celebrations since “God has not forsaken the party”.
The southern African country holds general elections on July 30 to elect a president, house of assembly and local government members.
Opposition MDC Alliance presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa has emerged as Mnangagwa’s top contender, but the latter said victory is certain.
“We should prepare for the victory celebrations because everywhere you point on the map of Zimbabwe Zanu PF is there.
“There is nowhere in Zimbabwe where you will not find Zanu PF, victory is certain, victory is certain. So I am saying on July 30 let us all go out to vote,” Mnangagwa told cheering party supporters in Chinhoyi.
“It is the party that was anointed by God (that has the largest following). God has not forsaken this party.”
The opposition has threatened street protests and an election boycott citing an uneven political field, accusing the electoral management body of wanting to rig the polls in favour of the ruling party.
But Mnangagwa argued the opposition is running scared of election defeat.
“Do not be distracted by some individuals and small parties (opposition) who are trying to foment violence, just ignore them,” Mnangagwa said.
“We do not want to fight them; we are too big to be worried about these small little groups.”
