Harare: President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has been inaugurated as the new President of Zimbabwe after the constitutional upheld his disputed election victory.
Mnangagwa becomes the second President of Zimbabwe after Mugabe who ruled the Southern African country since independence in 1980.
Mugabe was expected to attend but send his daughter Bona and her husband Simba Chikore to represent the ailing leader.
In a letter read by Mnangagwa, Mugabe cited ill-health as a reason him and his wife Grace could not attend.
President Mnangagwa, in his inauguration speech, has promised to lead Zimbabwe to prosperity and development.
He emphasised zero tolerance to corruption indicating that all graft cases will be investigated.
Mnangagwa will also set up a commission to investigate the deadly post-election violence which saw over six people killed in the capital Harare.
Devolution of power is one of the priorities the new administration will implement in line with the election promises Mnangagwa made during the election campaigns.
President Mnangagwa’s inauguration attracted many leaders from Africa among them, President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, Masisi of Botswana, Joseph Kabila of the Democratic Republic of Congo and President Edgar Lungu of Zambia.
