Harare: Zimbabwe’s newly elected Members of Parliament and Senators will be sworn in next week Wednesday, reports said.

Parliament Clerk Kennedy Chokuda is quoted in the state media saying the swearing in is in line with provisions of Section 128(1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment No. 20 of 2013.

This follows the July 30 harmonised elections that saw President Emmerson Mnangagwa retain the presidency, albeit in controversial circumstances.

Mnangagwa’s ruling Zanu PF retained its two-thirds majority in Parliament during the polls that the opposition MDC Alliance disputes as rigged.

Zanu-PF has since threatened to use its two-thirds majority to force legislation raising the age limit of presidential candidates from the current 40 years.

Analysts said this is meant to bar MDC Alliance presidential hopeful Nelson Chamisa (40) from contesting the 2023 presidential polls.

Zanu-PF, in a subtle dig at Chamisa, argues experience has shown 40 year presidential candidates exhibit immaturity.
