Maputo: MOZAMBIQUE’s opposition Renamo party has accused the ruling Frelimo party of planning to rig the upcoming municipal elections through the use of ballot papers designed to project a particular result.

Mozambique holds municipal elections on October 10.
“Information is circulating which greatly concerns us, according to which, on the ballot paper for these elections, in the rectangle for Renamo, there is a bit of plastic so that when people vote a short time afterwards the ink disappears and it becomes an invalid vote,” Renamo national election agent Andrew Magibire claimed.
The country’s Electoral Administration Technical Secretariat (STAE) dismissed Renamo’s claims as bizarre and outrageous.
STAE general director Felisberto Naife said ballot papers for all 53 municipalities are being printed by a company in South Africa.

Magibire also alleged threats and violence against its supporters to intimidate them against voting for the opposition party.

“We want democracy in this country, we want the rule of law, and we demand that all the institutions of justice apply the same measure to all those who disturb the process.

“It makes no sense only to harass members of Renamo,” he said.
