Harare: THE United Nations has urged an inclusive consultative process in troubled Zimbabwe to solve the country’s deepening crisis while noting that its agencies and other programmes remain open and fully operational following last week’s deadly protests.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday called for an all-stakeholders dialogue in the aftermath of the Monday and Tuesday anti-austerity protests that left over a dozen civilians’ dead, several injured and tens arrested.
“The United Nations strongly believes that the current challenges in the country can only be resolved through peaceful and inclusive consultative processes,” the UN said.
The UN noted concern over the prevailing socio-economic challenges faced by ordinary Zimbabweans and the dire food security outlook prompted by the El Niño weather phenomenon.
“The United Nations remains committed to continue supporting the people and Government of Zimbabwe in their quest to implement the Transitional Stabilisation Programme, and the advancement of sustainable, rights-based and inclusive economic growth and development for all, particularly the most vulnerable including children, women and youth,” the UN added.
