Lagos: Nigerians woke up to an announcement that today’s presidential and parliamentary elections have been postponed by a week with the electoral body citing logistical challenges.
The announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was made just five hours before the polls were due to open on Saturday.
Commission Chairperson Mahmood Yakubu said “proceeding with the election as scheduled is no longer feasible” a statement coming a week after some voting materials were burnt at at the electoral body’s warehouse.
The presidential and parliamentary elections will now be held on February 23 while those of governorship, state assembly and federal area council have been rescheduled to March 9.
